Oak Mountain State Park will host Monarchs & Milkweed on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 1-3 p.m. at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.
The program will explore the relationship between monarch butterflies and milkweed, the host plant monarchs depend on to complete their life cycle. Participants will learn about monarch biology, migration patterns and the role native plants play in supporting butterflies and other pollinators.
The program will also examine how habitat loss affects monarch populations and introduce simple steps people can take to provide habitat in their own yards and communities.
Each participant will receive a native milkweed seedling or young plant to take home, extending the program's conservation focus beyond the park.
The program is designed for ages 8 and older and is limited to 15 participants. Registration is required and costs $5 per person. Regular Oak Mountain State Park gate fees also apply.
