Members of the Shelby County City Clerks Association took the time to thank Chelsea Mayor Earl Niven on Wednesday.
During their March 16 luncheon, Niven was recognized for his service to the city of Chelsea as well as his help with the city clerks association. Chelsea City Clerk Becky Landers thanked Niven for his help in the 10 years since the organization’s founding.
“We decided that in appreciation of somebody who has been so good to us for the past 10 years, that we wanted to come up with something special for you, Mayor Niven,” Landers said.
Landers presented Niven with a plaque of appreciation from the city clerks, which read “In this world, it is not what we take, but what we give that makes us rich.”
“That is a true statement,” Niven said after reading the plaque.
“We have a slogan here, ‘It’s all about family,’ and I can certainly tell you that you are a part of the family even though you are not in Chelsea,” Niven said. “We try to treat you as if you were.”
Niven has been mayor of Chelsea for 20 years and last year announced he would not seek reelection.
Casey Bentley with the city’s insurance agency, Rux Carter Insurance Agency, said he appreciated what Niven has done for Shelby County.
“I just want to thank all of y’all, and I appreciate Mayor Niven for his service, for what all he’s done for Chelsea, and what he’s done for the county and the area,” he said.
Also at the meeting, Niven updated attendees on progress for the Chelsea Sports Complex. Phase one, which includes three baseball fields, is set to be complete in May.
“It’s just a matter of getting all the approvals from the planning commission,” he said.
Future phases of the complex include additional baseball fields, a soccer and football field, and tennis courts.
Members of the organization updated each other on exciting projects in their cities. Columbiana City Clerk Mark Frey discussed a park the Shelby County Arts Council has planned, and Pelham City Clerk Marsha Yates mentioned a Jimmy Buffett fan party they are holding at the Pelham Civic Center Complex. The party will be April 19, the day Jimmy Buffett is playing at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, at 4 p.m.
The next city clerks luncheon is June 22, and Greg Woodyard from Election Systems and Software will present to the clerks. There are also two scheduled poll worker’s classes on Aug. 11; one at Chelsea City Hall at 2 p.m. and the other at the Pelham Civic Center Complex at 6 p.m.
