Race director Ryan Elm with BlackWatch Sports estimated that 350 people registered for the inaugural Braveheart Challenge at Oak Mountain State Park in October 2017. The race returns Feb. 16 for its third year.
The BlackWatch Braveheart Challenge will return for its third year on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Founder Ryan Elm came up with the idea for Birmingham’s only obstacle race after he began running obstacle course races three years ago. At the time, he had to travel to compete because Birmingham didn’t have an event of its own.
“I just wanted to share the excitement that I get out of them.” Elm said.
Participants will run through Oak Mountain State Park wearing timing chips on a 6-mile path with more than 20 obstacles. According to the event’s website, the race “will challenge your speed, strength and stamina.”
Participants have the option to race earlier in the day in the Competitive Heat or at their leisure during the Open Heat later in the day.
To be able to run the obstacle course, runners have to be at least 14 years old by the day of the challenge, with racers ages 14-15 needing to be accompanied by an adult. It’s recommended that participants running in the Competitive Heat be able to complete a 5K in under 30 minutes. The top three male and female racers will win prizes for completing all obstacles, but all racers will receive a T-shirt and medal for finishing the race.
To register for the race and pay the $75 fee, visit braveheartrace.com. If you would like to volunteer, email ryan@blackwatchsports.com.
Youth volunteers will be able to receive school credit for their assistance during the race.
