The Oak Mountain area is doing a lot to educate local parents about issues their teens and kids might be facing. Two programs in particular — the monthly seminars hosted by Oak Mountain Compact and the Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church parenting conference — are combining to make an even bigger impact.
Oak Mountain Compact, a division of Compact 2020, hosts monthly parenting seminars at Oak Mountain High School, said Compact team member and Oak Mountain Middle School PTO President Allison Sinclair. Each month is different, and all are designed to help parents and students find new ways to approach situations.
“We realized part of what we were dealing with was not that parents were not caring, but parents not knowing and not being aware of what’s happening,” Sinclair said.
The meetings, which are held during lunchtime and at night, cover topics such as opioid addiction and social media/screen time. The meetings are open to everyone.
To take these meetings one step further, Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church is hosting The Struggle is Real Parenting Conference on Feb. 1-2. The conference will condense all of those monthly meetings into one weekend event and provide tons of knowledge for those who attend, she said.
On Friday, the conference will go from 5-9 p.m., and on Saturday it will last from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The church is located at 5080 Cahaba Valley Trace.
The sessions are for parents of children and youth, and subjects range from making room for family time to depression and self harm.
