The Fire at the Foothills BBQ & Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at Chelsea City Hall.
The Chelsea Kiwanis Club will host its Fire at the Foothills BBQ & Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, April 6, at Chelsea City Hall.
The event, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m., benefits the Kiwanis Club and Chelsea Fire and Rescue.
“It’s one of the largest community events in the city of Chelsea,” said Scott Weygand, one of the cook-off organizers. “People usually have a great time. There’s a lot of food to sample.”
The cook-off will feature barbecue and chili tastings, music and a kids play area. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
Weygand said the event typically raises around $4,000, with attendance ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 people depending onthe weather.
“It’s just a good time for people to come out and have fun,” Weygand said.
Fire at the Foothills is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which means it attracts top barbecuers from around the state and region. A judges panel will determine an overall grand champion and reserve grand champion, along with winners in the following categories: chicken, pork and ribs. Cash payouts will be on the line.
The entry fee for barbecue contestants is $185, and the entry fee for chili contestants is $20. Chelsea firefighters will serve as judges for the chili competition, in which contestants will vie for a trophy.
Chelsea City Hall is at 11611 Chelsea Road. For more information or to register, search Fire at the Foothills on Facebook, visit chelseakiwanis.org or email Weygand at scottw@hometownagent.net.
