The Women’s Missionary Union Foundation’s blanket drive is a way to spread love and warmth locally and overseas this Valentine's Day. Locally-collected blankets will benefit The WellHouse, a local organization dedicated to providing a safe residential environment to women who have been sexually exploited. Donations of $25 are also being collected, and those will supply a blanket to Syrian refugees living in Jordan through Arab Woman Today Ministries.
About 20 blankets have been collected to date, and there are eight ministries or homeless shelters continuing to accept donations. The blankets will be given to women in the WellHouse Transitional Living home, who have been a part of the organization and are nearing completion of the program.
Ashley Anderson, development director with The WellHouse, said there are two women living in the Transitional Living home and several more are ready to move in soon.
“For so many of these women, having the support and love shown to them by a gift like a blanket can mean to much to them,” Anderson said.
Candice Lee, marketing director for the WMU Foundation said, “We have partnered with Arab Woman Today Ministries to help Syrian refugees.”
They will use the funds collected to purchase blankets and heaters for families who are experiencing an unusually cold winter in Jordan, which borders Syria and has seen an increase in the number of refugees.
“Whether it’s a blanket given to a refugee or to someone in need in your community, it’s a small way to show the love of Christ,” said David George, president of the WMU Foundation, in a press release.
Blankets can be donated at the WMU Foundation's office, located at 100 Missionary Ridge in Birmingham.
