The Spain Park Scholars Bowl Team won the Alabama Scholastic Competition Association state tournament April 8.
This is Spain Park’s third state championship in the past four years, two varsity state titles (2013, 2016) and one JV state title (2015) competing against 94 schools statewide.
Spain Park’s team went undefeated in pool play (5-0) and then beat LAMP of Montgomery in the quarterfinals 475-240, Huntsville in the semifinals 395-300 and Gadsden City in the best-two-of-three finals 415-250 and 450-260.
Coach Todd Parker commented, “These young men certainly earned and deserved this title. I could not be prouder of the self-discipline, perseverance and hard work they put in over the last two years that allowed them to have the opportunity to achieve what they did last Friday.”
Jack Peters is this year’s team captain, and he and fellow senior Stanley Badio were Spain Park’s top scorers throughout the tournament and the season. However, this was a true team effort as no one player scored enough individual points to be named to the all-tournament team, but working collectively they performed well enough to be the state’s best.
The other team members include:
► Austin Peinhardt - senior
► Daniel Picard - junior
► Jack Gutshall - junior
► Grady Freeman - sophomore
The team qualified for nationals in Dallas in May.
