May 1 was National College Decision Day, and one Oak Mountain High School senior had several to choose from — including seven Ivy League institutions.
Armeen Barghi has decided to attend Harvard University after receiving acceptance letters from not only Harvard but also Princeton University, Yale University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College and Brown University. Barghi was also accepted to Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Stanford University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Early Medical School Acceptance Program.
Barghi is undecided about his major but plans to study biological sciences and pursue research opportunities while attending Harvard University.
“One of the main reasons I chose Harvard is to continue pursuing scientific research in college,” Barghi said. “Harvard offers unparalleled mentorship opportunities under world-renowned faculty. Also, Boston and Cambridge’s vibrant communities are filled with individuals devoted to helping students flourish academically and socially.”
Barghi’s list of high school accolades and accomplishments at Oak Mountain is impressive. He is the valedictorian for the graduating class of 2017, a Shelby County Superintendent Super Scholar and a National Merit Finalist. He was also presented with the College Ready Student of the Year by the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. While attending OMHS he served as the president of Future Business Leaders of America, Science National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. He was also a member of the school’s table tennis team.
“Armeen is the kind of student every administrator hopes to have in his or her school,” said OMHS Principal Kristi Sayers. “He is a self-directed learner who never ceases gathering information to make himself better prepared to help other people. He has a desire to be the best he can be, but he also has a desire to help others be the best they can be.”
Barghi is the second in his family to achieve great success after attending Oak Mountain High School. His older brother Ameen Barghi, a 2011 graduate, won both the prestigious Goldwater and Rhodes Scholarships while attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a neuroscience and translational research major. He obtained a master’s degree in public policy analysis at Oxford University in England and is currently attending Harvard Medical School.
