UPDATE: As of 9 a.m., the National Weather Service has announced snow totals of up to 5 inches in areas under a winter storm warning.
Shelby County Schools will be closed today due to inclement weather, according to a post on the Shelby County Schools Twitter page. Hoover City Schools also announced it would close.
The school system previously announced, on Thursday night, that it would have a two-hour delayed start.
The National Weather Service announced Friday morning that the greater Birmingham area, including Jefferson and Shelby counties, was under a winter storm warning. Some portions of Shelby County could get between 2-3 inches of snowfall, according to the NWS.
Rain or a rain/snow mix is expected throughout the day, the NWS forecasts, and temperatures are set to drop once heavier precipitation starts.
NWS Birmingham is located at the Shelby County Airport in Calera, and had officially seen 1 inch of accumulation as of 7 a.m. Snow was beginning to stick to some roads around 7:20 a.m., according to an NWS Birmingham Tweet.
