The Shelby County Schools app is available for download on Apple and Android devices.
The Shelby County School District is reaching out to the community through their mobile phones.
The district launched a mobile app on Feb. 19 as a way to communicate with parents, students, employees and other community stakeholders. The app includes news and other information from the school district.
“We continue to search for better ways to communicate with our stakeholders,” said Superintendent Randy Fuller in a Shelby County Schools release. “This mobile app gives us the opportunity to reach all of our audiences with useful information that they can access instantaneously.
The app was developed by School Apps USA and was customized with features suggested by community members, said public relations and community education supervisor Cindy Warner. Shelby County Schools sent out a survey to get feedback for an app, and Warner said they received 768 responses to the survey.
About 95 percent of those responses were in favor of an app, she said, and people were able to comment on which features they wanted to see.
The app includes access to grades, calendars and events, lunch menus, news and push notifications for school closures, emergencies or upcoming events. There is also one-touch dialing for all district schools and GPS directions for all school addresses.
The app also has a confidential bully report that allows students or parents to anonymously report bullying.
“Once the report is submitted, it will be reviewed by a supervisor in student services,” said Lewis Brooks, assistant superintendent of pupil services and support. “We are very excited that this app gives our students and parents another confidential way to report incidents of bullying so that we can immediately address the issue in order to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all our students.”
The app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
