PELHAM -- The Chelsea High School football team started fast and did not let up offensively, as the Hornets kept their place atop Class 6A, Region 5.
Chelsea scored 29 points in the first quarter and went on to win 64-38 over region foe Pelham. The Hornets scored in every phase of the game, scoring on offense, defense and special teams in the win. Chelsea also forced four fumbles in the game.
Chelsea head coach Dustin Goodwin said there will always be things to work on even after putting up 64 points on offense.
“If you’re still punting, you still have things to work on offensively,” Goodwin said. “We will evaluate the film and see what we need to work on, but overall very proud of the effort our kids played with, and obviously happy with another win.”
Chelsea tallied two special teams touchdowns and one defensive touchdown to aid the monstrous offensive effort. Collier Blair led Chelsea in rushing with 157 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns in the contest. Chelsea finished with 343 total yards.
Pelham’s offense finished with 517 total yards, but turnovers doomed the Panthers.
Chelsea’s 29 first-quarter points came in a variety of ways. Adam Reaves hit Gabe Ruffin for a 13-yard score and Chelsea turned an ensuing fumble into another score on a Blair 4-yard run.
Pelham’s Gabriel Gamble scored on a 79-yard touchdown run. But the Hornets cashed in on an 85-yard punt return touchdown for Ladarius Gary and a 26-yard scoop and score from Cole Berryman. Xavier Lankford threw a touchdown pass to Walker Lyles with 15 seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 29-14 at the end of one quarter.
Chelsea didn’t stop there.
Blair scored his second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run, before Pelham answered with a Lankford 2-yard touchdown run.
The Hornets went into their bag of tricks when Caleb Moore tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Michael Gibbs on a flea flicker. Chelsea then scored again when Jordan Smith blocked and recovered a punt. Lankford added another touchdown run at the end of the second quarter. Chelsea led 50-28 at halftime.
Pelham drove the ball to the goal line but a fumble turned the ball back to Chelsea in the opening stages of the second half. Salvador Jimenez Lopez drilled a 31-yard field goal for Pelham to make the score 50-31.
Chelsea scored two more times in the fourth quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run from Reaves and a 3-yard touchdown run from Gibbs. Lankford tossed another passing touchdown, but Chelsea finished with the 64-38 region win.
Chelsea’s running back Blair said he hopes the offense continues to be a dominant force heading into the last half of the season.
“I hope it translates right over,” Blair said. “We played great and we were clicking on all cylinders. We were running the ball, throwing the ball and hitting all the keys (tonight).”
