CHELSEA - Briarwood Christian School’s foray into Class 6A region play began with a 20-3 road win at rival Chelsea on Friday night.
Tyler Waugh scored two touchdowns. The senior also forced and recovered a key third-quarter fumble in the win. Briarwood improved to 2-1, 1-0 in Region 5 after playing in Class 5A for the last four seasons. Chelsea dropped to 1-2, 0-1.
The Lions led 7-3 at half, but dominated the second half, keeping the Hornets out of the end zone and holding the ball for the last 9:30 of the game.
“The offense did a great job and coaches had a great game plan,” Briarwood coach Matthew Forester said. “We shot ourselves in the foot a little in the first half, but the offense really committed at halftime to say we’re going to play Briarwood football, play clean football and really do better.”
Briarwood started the game hot, scoring in just five plays. Parker Hutson had runs of 16 and 7 yards to set up Waugh’s 4-yard score.
“I came out there and you’ve got those beginning of the game nerves, but you knock them in the mouth and you’re fine the rest of the game,” Hutson said. “It was awesome to see our offense come out and punch them in the mouth like that.”
Chelsea went right down the field on an 18-play drive, but could not punch it into the end zone. Alex Trout’s 22-yard field goal was the Hornets’ lone score.
The Hornets got a gift after a bad Briarwood punt, taking over at the 31-yard line, but also couldn’t score. This time, Briarwood’s Cal Higdon blocked a 29-yard field goal.
Chelsea’s first drive resulted in disaster for the Hornets. Waugh stripped running back Collier Blair and fell on the fumble recovery at the Chelsea 23. His 1-yard run gave Briarwood a 14-3 lead.
“We held them up and we realized he was carrying it a little loose the whole game,” Waugh said. “The first drive is always the most important, so we hit him hard and we got the turnover.”
Briarwood hit two big pass plays late in the third quarter. Christopher Vizzina connected with Brooks Donnelly for a 39-yard gain to the 11 and after the team lost two yards on the next two plays, he hit Donnelly again for a 13-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter.
Chelsea rode Blair, giving him 25 carries that he turned into 78 yards, but the Hornets couldn’t get anything going in the pass game. Briarwood ran 33 second-half plays to just 16 for Chelsea and two of those were punts.
“It boils down to just not being able to sustain drives,” Chelsea head coach Dustin Goodwin said. “When the defense is on the field all night, they’re ultimately going to get tired. I think they got tired and missed some tackles and allowed them to prolong some drives. Not being able to stay on the field offensively ultimately caused us to make some mistakes on the defensive side.”
Vizzina connected on 12-of-21 passes for 150 yards. Donnelly caught three passes for 67 yards. Luke Reebals led Briarwood with 61 rushing yards on 12 carries.
The teams continue Region 5 play next Friday as Briarwood hosts Woodlawn and Chelsea is at Homewood.
