BASEBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood Christian School baseball team fell to Hewitt-Trussville, 5-2, on Monday. The Lions were no-hit by Chelsea’s Brendon Case in a 2-0 defeat on Thursday.
On Friday, Briarwood rebounded with an 11-4 win over Tuscaloosa County. The Lions scored in every inning and were led by Wesley Helms, who finished 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jonah Carroll and Hudson Hartsfield each drove in two runs.
Chelsea
Chelsea dropped a 3-0 decision to Mountain Brook on Monday night. Mountain Brook’s Hayden Bruno allowed just one hit in his complete game shutout. Chelsea got the better of Briarwood on Thursday, beating the Lions 2-0 on the back of Brendon Case’s no-hitter. Case struck out nine in his seven innings.
Chelsea swept a doubleheader against John Carroll on Saturday, scoring a combined 24 runs over two games. In the first game, the Hornets took home an 11-4 win. Connor Griffin, Riley Watkins and Carter Frederick each knocked in two runs. The Hornets used a 10-run second inning to cruise to a 13-3 victory in the second game. Jacob Tinnell and William Sullivan each drove in three runs in the contest.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain baseball team scratched out a 3-2 win over Pell City on Wednesday, behind Carlton Lucas’ complete game on the mound. Lucas allowed two runs on six hits in his seven innings of work.
Oak Mountain continued its perfect start to the season with a 3-1 win over Hoover. Gene Hurst drove in two runs and hit a home run and Wesley Dennis hurled a complete game, allowing just two hits and a single run.
The Eagles improved to 14-0 with a pair of wins over Gardendale on Friday. Oak Mountain won the first game, 8-1, behind a big offensive day. Landon Cato doubled and drove in three runs, while Jackson Kimbrell drove in two runs with a pair of extra base hits. Kimbrell also had an impressive showing on the mound, allowing three hits and one run with 15 strikeouts in six innings of work.
In the second game, Hurst led the way in the Eagles’ 5-1 win. Hurst drove in three runs and allowed a single unearned run in a complete game victory.
Spain Park
The Spain Park baseball team succumbed to a late Vestavia Hills rally on Tuesday, losing 11-9. The Jags grabbed a 9-6 lead with a five-run fifth inning, but the Rebels put up a five-spot in the seventh to claim the victory. Matthew Moser and Adam Wygle each drove in a pair of runs for the Jags.
The Jags routed Shelby County, 12-0, on Wednesday. Spain Park plated eight runs in a big seventh inning to pull away. Noah Burns allowed just two hits and struck out eight in six scoreless innings on the mound. Colton Ledbetter, Sam Dozier and Colby Mills each drove in two runs.
Spain Park fell to Brooks, 7-3, on Friday. Brody Richey drove in a pair of runs and Cooper White doubled in a 2-for-4 game.
SOFTBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood Christian School softball team began the week with a 12-11 win over Calera in eight innings. Eighth-grader Jaddin Glenn was 3-for-3 in the game and notched the game-winning RBI single.
The Lions picked up another win on Tuesday night, defeating Homewood 11-3. Caroline Campbell pitched a complete game, striking out seven in her seven innings of work. Campbell and Riley Coyne also connected on back-to-back home runs.
The Lions dropped an area contest to Shelby County, 8-6, on Thursday. Coyne hit a pair of solo home runs in the contest.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain softball team cruised to a 16-1 win over Mountain Brook in the area opener on Tuesday. The Eagles scored four in the first and eight in the third to take control. Cassady Greenwood led the way offensively, with a 3-for-3 night that included a triple, home run and four RBIs. Tori Martin and Riley Sullivan each drove in two runs, and Clara Fuller allowed just two hits and a run in five innings of work.
The Eagles picked up a 5-2 win over Tuscaloosa County on Thursday. Lacy Marty went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. Torie Denkers went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run home run.
Oak Mountain played in Daphne’s tournament over the weekend. The Eagles split their two games on Friday. In the first game, they beat Robertsdale, 6-2. Greenwood hit a homer and drove in five runs. Jenna Galloway had three hits and scored twice, while Fuller allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in five innings. In the second game, however, the Eagles mustered just one hit in a 7-0 loss to Daphne.
To finish up pool play on Saturday, Oak Mountain fell to Baldwin County, 7-2. Greenwood drove in a run and Bryson Campbell added a double. The Eagles bowed out in bracket play with a 2-0 loss to Daphne. Marty pitched well, allowing four hits and two runs in four innings, but the Eagles were unable to find enough offense.
Spain Park
The Spain Park softball team took care of Hueytown, 19-9, on Wednesday. Alexis Anderson led the way offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and five RBIs. Lindsay Parker drove in three runs, while Maddie Majors, Caroline Keith, Caroline Wooley and Savannah Rogers all drove in two runs apiece. Caroline Kendrick walked four times and scored four times.
SOCCER
Oak Mountain
In a game that was moved to Clay-Chalkville due to poor field conditions at Oak Mountain, the Lady Eagles soccer team pulled off a 6-0 win over Grissom on Tuesday.
Both boys and girls teams played Parkview (Georgia) on Friday night. The Lady Eagles fell, 2-1, in penalty kicks, while the boys dropped a 1-0 decision.
Chelsea
The Chelsea girls soccer team took down area foe Helena, 8-0, on Tuesday. The boys team began area play with a win over Helena as well, although in much more dramatic fashion. Andrew Messier scored his first goal of the season, as his header in the extra period was the decisive goal in the 3-2 win.
On Thursday, the Chelsea girls shut out Westminster-Oak Mountain, 4-0. The boys traveled to Talladega and returned home with a 3-1 victory.
On Friday, Chelsea’s boys defeated Shelby County, 14-0.
Briarwood
The Briarwood girls soccer team shut out Calera, 6-0, on Tuesday. The boys pitched a shutout as well, beating Calera 5-0. On Thursday, the boys defeated Woodlawn, 10-0.
Briarwood’s girls took down a tough Indian Springs team, 3-2, on Friday.
Spain Park
The Spain Park High School boys soccer team fell to Mountain Brook on Monday, losing 6-5 in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw. The boys dropped a 4-3 decision to Westminster-Oak Mountain on Thursday.
The Spain Park girls participated in the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island, Georgia, over the weekend. On Friday, the Lady Jags defeated Marietta, 4-0. The Lady Jags won by the same 4-0 margin on Saturday morning to defeat River Ridge. Spain Park was defeated 1-0 by Lambert to conclude its run in the tournament.
