The Alabama High School Athletic Association held its annual All-Star week in Montgomery this past week, July 15-19.
The week is an opportunity for coaches and athletic administrators around the state to congregate for clinics, banquets and other events. Rising seniors were selected to play in all-star games in each sport.
Here is a look at how the athletes selected from Briarwood, Chelsea, Oak Mountain and Spain Park fared in their all-star opportunities. Each of the athletes played on the North teams, competing against South all-stars.
Briarwood’s Will Clark got two at-bats in the baseball game, which the South team won 4-1.
Chelsea’s Haley Trotter scored 12 points for the North team in a dominant 87-46 win.
Briarwood’s Mary Grace Parker ran the cross-country race in 19 minutes, 13 seconds, finishing second. The North team won 17-35.
Oak Mountain’s John Shoemaker won the boys cross-country race with a time of 15:39, as the North team won 20-41.
Briarwood’s Sam Burns helped the North boys golf team to a 39-33 win.
Keat Litton of Spain Park was the administrative coach for the North boys and girls golf teams.
Spain Park’s Carmen Britt paired with Oneonta’s Savannah Sandlin to defeat the duo of Rayla Pierce of Gulf Shores and Lyndee Davis of Smiths Station 11.5-6.5. The North team won the competition 51-39.
Oak Mountain’s Gabe Capocci played for the North boys soccer team in the 4-1 win.
In the same game, Briarwood’s Sawyer Felton hit a corner kick in the fourth minute that led to the game’s opening goal.
Briarwood’s Taylor Leib was named the MVP of the North girls soccer team, scoring the game’s first goal in the 10th minute. She also assisted on a goal from a corner kick in the second half in the 4-1 win.
Spain Park’s Addie Soehn scored two unassisted goals in the first half of that game.
Spain Park’s Charlee Bennett played for the North softball team, driving in two runs of the second game of the doubleheader.
Chelsea’s Sydney Carroll pitched three innings in the first softball game, allowing just one hit. She allowed three runs, with only one of them being earned. She also hit a home run in the second game.
Spain Park’s Alexa Benda finished with three kills in the North volleyball team’s 3-2 win.
Chelsea’s Lauren Buchanan was named the MVP of the North volleyball team, notching two kills and two service aces in the fifth and final game. She finished with 13 kills overall.
Oak Mountain’s Emma Hawkins was named one of the winners of the AHSADCA Coaches’ Children Scholarship, as the daughter of Oak Mountain bowling and softball coach CJ Urse Hawkins.
