BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams continued area play last week, starting with a pair of tight losses to Woodlawn on Tuesday. The girls team fell to Woodlawn 29-27 on a last-second shot, as Maddie Vaughn’s 15 points were not enough for the Lady Lions. The boys team battled, but fell short 70-66.
Ramsay was able to notch a sweep over the Lions on Friday, beginning with the Rams taking a 54-16 victory in the girls game. Three Lady Rams players notched double figures in points. The boys game was a thriller, with Ramsay hanging on for a 68-63 win after Briarwood erased a double-digit deficit in the second half. Hayden Lamey led the Lions with 17 points, with Jack Dicen right behind at 16 points. Chance Beard and Zac Nuyt notched 10 points each as well.
Saturday was a different story for Briarwood, as both teams picked up victories over Sylacauga. The girls picked up a convincing 47-18 win, behind 14 points from Maddie Vaughn and 11 from Emily Scott. The boys grinded out a 76-70 win in double overtime, as Sam Russell sank a 3-pointer near the end of the first overtime to extend the game. Lamey had 28 points overall to lead the team, and Cal Reebals added 19 points.
The Briarwood boys now have an 11-10 record and are 1-3 in Class 5A, Area 8 play. The girls are 8-7 and 0-4. This week, the Lions have two more area dates, as they host Woodlawn on Tuesday and travel to John Carroll on Thursday. The boys host Hueytown on Saturday as well.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams began last week with area victories, as both the girls and boys teams improved to 3-0 in Class 6A, Area 8.
On Tuesday, the Lady Hornets played a great game en route to a 59-44 win over Helena. Pressley Rains poured in a team-high 22 points, with Jordan Parker adding 17 and Sydney Schwallie scoring 12 points in support. The boys also notched a win over Helena, holding on for the 55-44 triumph. Jacob Tierney had a big night, posting 20 points. Daniel Washington added 16 points.
The girls ran the area mark to 4-0 on Friday with a 38-27 win over Pelham, as Parker scored nine points in a defensive contest. The boys game was also a low-scoring affair, with Pelham knocking off the Hornets 34-30. Robert Marquet had eight points, and Washington scored seven.
The Lady Hornets are now 11-10 overall and 4-0 in area play, and have won six games in a row. The boys 11-11 and 3-1. The Hornets conclude area play this week at Calera on Tuesday and at Helena on Friday.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams continued area play last week, beginning with a split against Thompson on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles were unable to hold onto a 10-point halftime lead and fell to Thompson 60-57. Brooklyn Oden led the Warriors with 31 points to match Oak Mountain’s Kailey Rory, who poured in 29 points. Hannah Edwards added 13 points as well.
The boys team was able to pick up a 53-44 win, behind 16 points and 10 rebounds from Antheny Carey. Noah Young scored 11 points, and Evan Smith contributed seven points and eight assists in the victory.
On Friday, both Oak Mountain teams ran into strong Hoover teams. The Lady Eagles fell to Hoover 67-20, and the boys ultimately fell 54-47 despite the game being tied late. Zane Nelson led Oak Mountain with 14 points, while Smith chipped in 10.
Oak Mountain’s boys now have a 15-8 record and are 2-2 in area play, while the girls are 11-11 and 0-4. This week, the Eagles finish area play by hosting Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday and traveling to Thompson on Thursday.
BOWLING
The Oak Mountain bowling teams competed in the South Regional last Thursday and Friday in Foley. After the first day of competition, which determined seeding for Friday’s bracket format, the Eagles boys were the No. 13 seed. In the first round on Friday, they fell to No. 4 Auburn 1,476-1,039, ending their season.
The girls were able to qualify for state thanks to a first-round win by one pin over Daphne, 1,066-1,065. The Lady Eagles fell to eventual runner-up Stanhope Elmore 1,286-1,053 in the second round. The state tournament is this Thursday and Friday at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham.
WRESTLING
The Chelsea wrestling team took part in the state duals tournament last Friday. In the Class 6A first round, the Hornets defeated Clay-Chalkville 53-30, but Gardendale knocked off Chelsea 42-34 in the second round. Chelsea also took part in the Patriot Scramble on Saturday, coming home fourth overall with 62 points. Gardendale, McAdory and Mae Jemison were the top three teams.
The Oak Mountain wrestling team competed in a tri-match at Clay-Chalkville last Tuesday. The Eagles notched a 59-9 win over Pelham and fell to Clay-Chalkville 36-33.
