BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams began last week with a Class 5A, Area 8 matchup with Woodlawn on Tuesday. The Lady Lions stormed to a 62-22 win behind 27 points from Maddie Vaughn, who hit eight 3-pointers on the night, just one shy of the school record. Anna Martin also added 14 points. The boys team, battling a flu outbreak throughout the locker room, tested Woodlawn but fell 78-74. Landon Nuyt scored 24 points to pace the Lions, while Ryan Donohoo added 15 points and Hayden Lamey notched 14.
On Friday, both Lions teams suffered defeats to Ramsay. The Lady Lions fell 70-24 and the boys dropped a 75-50 decision. On Saturday, Briarwood traveled to Sylacauga, with the girls picking up a 38-35 win and the boys falling 69-68 in a tight game. Despite the loss, Lamey scored his 1,000th career point for the Lions.
The Briarwood boys are now 13-6 overall, 1-3 in area play. The girls are 12-6, 2-2. This week, the Lions are at Woodlawn on Tuesday, at Benjamin Russell on Thursday and host John Carroll on Friday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams continued Class 6A, Area 8 play last Tuesday at Helena. The Lady Hornets picked up a 51-39 win over the Huskies. Jordan Parker led the way with 19 points, with Ellen Fleming scoring 13 and Sydney Schwallie adding 10 points in support. The boys team took a 60-38 loss. Jacob Tierney scored nine points for the Hornets in defeat.
On Friday, the Hornets paid a visit to Pelham for another area matchup. Pelham’s girls overwhelmed Chelsea and ran away with a 58-46 win. Schwallie’s 20 points led all scorers in the contest. For Pelham, Laci Gogan had 19 points, Emma McKenney had a big game with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Tamia Nelson posted 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. For Chelsea, Sophia Brown scored 10 points and Parker added seven. In the boys game, the Hornets picked up a 47-39 win. Caleb Moore led the way with 14 points and Andrew Messier added 11 points for the Hornets. For Pelham, Xavier Lankford scored 12 points and Blake Floyd finished with 11.
The Chelsea girls are now 18-5, 3-1 in area play. The boys are 11-13, 2-2. This week, the Hornets host Calera on Tuesday and Helena on Friday in area contests, before hosting Thompson on Sautrday.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams picked up a sweep of Thompson last Tuesday in Class 7A, Area 5 play. The Lady Eagles notched their second straight win with a gutsy 38-29 victory. Abby Gordon led the team with 12 points, while Taniyah Smith notched a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The boys team earned a 60-52 win to stay perfect in area action. Zane Nelson led the team with 17 points, followed by Noah Young’s 16 points. Will Shaver also added 11 points. Chaney Johnson led Thompson with 12 points and Jack Dorolek scored 10.
On Friday evening, both teams fell to Hoover. The Lady Eagles fell 70-22, as Hoover’s Aniya Hubbard led all scorers with 15 points. The boys game had its share of dramatic moments, as Hoover’s Austin Montgomery hit the game-winning 3-pointer in double overtime to give the Bucs a 48-45 win. Nelson scored 17 points to lead Oak Mountain, with Shaver adding nine points. DJ Fairley led Hoover with 15 points, Brodin Grady had 13 and Chip Culpepper finished with nine points.
The Oak Mountain boys are now 15-8 overall, 3-1 in area play. The girls are 7-15, 2-2. This week, the Eagles are at Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday and host Thompson on Friday to wrap up area play.
WRESTLING
Last Thursday, the Chelsea wrestling team competed in the Class 6A state duals. The Hornets knocked off Clay-Chalkville 60-18 in the first round before falling to Gardendale 45-30 in the quarterfinals. Over the weekend, the Hornets won the Warrior Invitational at Thompson as well.
Last Tuesday, Oak Mountain beat Mountain Brook 48-14. On Thursday, the Eagles knocked off Auburn 51-21 in the first round of the Class 7A state duals. This week, Oak Mountain visits Thompson in the semifinals.
TRACK AND FIELD
Oak Mountain’s indoor track and field team participated in the inaugural Hump Day Octameet last Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The boys finished fourth as a team and the girls were eighth. Aaron Brooks finished second in both the 60-meter and 400-meter runs. Walker Cole was third in the 3,200-meter run, the 4x200 relay team finished third and Harrison Dimick won the shot put event with a throw of 53 feet, 11 inches.
BOWLING
The Oak Mountain bowling teams earned wins last Monday. The boys team set a school record with a 1,578-1,413 win over Hoover, while the girls also knocked off Hoover.
Later in the week, the Eagles competed in the South Regional Tournament in Mobile. The girls saw their season end, as they earned the No. 13 seed in bracket play and fell to Gulf Shores 1,110-986 in the first round. The boys qualified for the state tournament this week by virtue of their win over Baker. The No. 9 seed Eagles beat Baker 1,393-1,292 in the first round. They fell to Vestavia Hills 1,640-1,390 in the second round.
The state tournament is Thursday and Friday at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham.
