Oak Mountain Track and Field
The Oak Mountain High School boys indoor track and field team finished second at the Class 7A state meet, held Feb. 1-2, 2019, at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Indoor track and field teams from the 280 corridor competed over the weekend at the AHSAA state championships, held Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Oak Mountain had the best showing of any local school, placing second in the Class 7A boys division.
Trey Allen won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 9 inches. His mark set a state meet record and secured his first individual state title.
Allen is the nation’s top-ranked high jumper. Earlier in the season, he cleared 7 feet.
“It was a good performance,” Allen said of the state meet. “I thought I could have done better, but I can't complain about a state record.”
Aaron Brooks joined Allen as a state champion. He won the 60-meter dash in 6.94 seconds. Glen Humphrey was second in the 400 meters, running 49.46. Harrison Dimick was second in the shot put with a throw of 53-9.
The Eagles also performed well in the relays. They finished second in the 4x200 and third in the 4x400.
Nicole Payne led the Oak Mountain girls to a ninth-place finish at the meet. She won the 60 dash and 400, setting state meet records in both events. Payne took the 60 in 7.54 and the 400 in 54.11. Her 400 time ranks fourth in the nation.
Evie Bell was sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:23.36 and seventh in the 800 meters in 2:24.04.
The Eagles were fourth in the 4x200 relay and fifth in the 4x400 relay.
Briarwood
Briarwood Christian placed seventh in the 4A-5A boys division and eighth in the 4A-5A girls division.
Jake Nunn led the boys team with a runner-up finish in the 400. He ran 49.61 to set a new school record. Nicholas Robson (third, 60-meter hurdles) and Riley Margene (third, pole vault) also reached the podium.
Cady McPhail was the top point scorer for the Briarwood girls. She took second in the 800 in 2:27.5 and third in the 1,600 in 5:31.73.
Lauren Musachia cleared 4-10 to place fifth in the high jump.
Chelsea
Chelsea’s Teanna Cason was third in the 6A girls 3,200 meters in 12:10.6.
BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams began the final week of the regular season by celebrating senior night on Tuesday, as the Lions swept a pair of games with Dora. The Lady Lions picked up a 62-34 victory, with four players scoring 10 points in the game, as Marylane Graham, Holly Hancock, Jalen Hunter and Maddie Vaughn all reached the mark. The boys team won 65-51 behind a 19-point night from Hayden Lamey and 17 from Jack Dicen.
The Briarwood boys fell to Mortimer Jordan 47-45 on Thursday, before the Lions concluded the regular season on Friday night at Calera. The Lady Lions fell to the Eagles 45-31 despite Emily Scott and Vaughn scoring 12 points each. The boys team fell 81-77. Chance Beard led the way for the Lions with 24 points, while Lamey scored 19 and Alex Key added 12.
The Briarwood boys finished with a 13-13 regular season record, while the girls are 11-8. The girls face John Carroll in the opening round of the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Ramsay High School. The winner will play in the final on Friday at 6 p.m. The boys face Woodlawn on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., also at Ramsay, with the final set for Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Chelsea
Chelsea and Oak Mountain began the final week of the regular season last Monday night, with the Hornets visiting the Eagles, who celebrated senior night. The Eagles picked up the sweep, starting with a 67-55 win in the girls game. For Oak Mountain, Kailey Rory had 22 points and Clara Fuller added 10. Mackenzie Titus led Chelsea with 19 points, and Jordan Parker added 12 points.
In the boys game, Oak Mountain cruised to a 62-46 victory. Drew Dunn led Oak Mountain with 16 points, while Noah Young scored 12 points. Zane Nelson and Antheny Carey each scored 10. Daniel Washington led Chelsea with 13 points.
Chelsea celebrated its seniors on Thursday, as the Hornets hosted Tuscaloosa County. The Chelsea girls fell in a close 45-43 decision. Ellen Fleming led the way with 15 points, and Pressley Rains scored 12 points. The boys team picked up a 53-43 win over the visitors. Matthew Lanzi led the charge with 16 points, and Washington scored 13.
The boys concluded the regular season on Friday with a 64-47 loss to McAdory. Washington went for 17 points, and Robert Marquet scored nine.
The girls team finished the regular season with a 13-12 record and will host the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament. The Lady Hornets face Helena on Tuesday at 6 p.m., with the final set for Thursday at 7 p.m. The boys tournament is at Helena, with Chelsea taking on Calera in the first round on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The final will be Friday at 7 p.m.

Oak Mountain finished up the regular season with a sweep of Helena on Friday night. The Lady Eagles took home a 51-41 victory behind 19 points from Rory and 12 points from Hannah Edwards. The boys picked up a 43-36 victory. Nelson led the team with 12 points in the game, while Young, Evan Smith and Will Shaver all scored seven points.
The Lady Eagles finished the regular season with a 15-11 mark and will take on Tuscaloosa County in the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament at Hoover on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The final of the tournament is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. The boys tournament is also at Hoover, and the boys team opens up with Thompson on Thursday at 6 p.m. The final will be played on Saturday as well, at 7:30 p.m.
