BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams began the final week of regular season play last Tuesday by celebrating senior night on Tuesday against Moody. The Lions pulled off a sweep, starting with the Lady Lions earning a 49-19 win. Maddie Vaughn and Bennett Shaw led the way with 12 points each and Anna Martin added 11. The boys team picked up a 58-50 win.
Briarwood concluded the regular season on Friday night with losses to Calera. The Lady Lions fell 50-46, while the boys dropped a 74-67 decision.
The Briarwood boys finished the regular season with a 15-9 record and the girls are 15-8. This week, the Lions will begin postseason play with the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament. Both tournaments will be hosted by Ramsay. The girls will face John Carroll in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and the boys play Woodlawn on Wednesday at 7:30. The finals are set for Friday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams celebrated senior night last Tuesday to tip off the last week of the regular season. The Lady Hornets picked up a 43-32 win and were led by Jordan Parker’s 12 points. Pressley Rains, Sydney Schwallie and Ellen Fleming each scored seven points as well. The Oak Mountain boys took down the Hornets 46-37. Jacob Tierney led Chelsea with 10 points and Andrew Messier scored seven. Wilder Evers led Oak Mountain with 15 points and four assists.
Chelsea concluded the regular season on Thursday with a trip to Tuscaloosa County. The Lady Hornets earned a 54-46 win over the Class 7A foe. Parker led the way with 19 points, with Fleming and Rains each chipping in nine points as well. The boys team also picked up a victory, winning 56-43. Tierney broke out with 20 points, including six 3-point makes. Caleb Moore went for 12 points and nine rebounds and Bryant Royster finished with 11 points.
The Chelsea girls finished the regular season with a 23-5 overall record, while the boys sit at 12-17. This week, the Hornets begin postseason play with the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament. The girls will host the area tournament, and face Calera in the semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner plays in the final against Pelham or Helena on Thursday at 7 p.m. The boys tournament will be played at Helena, with the Hornets facing Calera on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner moves to the final against Pelham or Helena on Friday at 7 p.m.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams were back in action last Tuesday, beginning the final week of regular season play. The Eagles traveled to Chelsea and earned a split on the evening. The Lady Eagles fell to Chelsea 43-32, as Chelsea’s Jordan Parker led the team with 12 points. The boys team earned a 46-37 victory, led by 15 points and four assists from Wilder Evers. Noah Young and Will Shaver each notched eight points and eight rebounds, while Jacob Tierney led Chelsea with 10 points.
Oak Mountain’s games against Helena were cancelled on Friday due to a flu outbreak at Oak Mountain, so the Oak Mountain boys finished the regular season with an 18-8 overall record, while the girls are 9-16. This week, the Eagles play in the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament. The Lady Eagles play at Hoover against Thompson on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., while the boys host Tuscaloosa County at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The girls final is Thursday and the boys final is Friday.
Westminster-Oak Mountain
The Westminster-Oak Mountain girls basketball team began the final week of the regular season last Monday with a 52-39 win over Danville. Morgan White and Megan Gache each scored 17 points to lead the way and Virginia Welch added 12 points.
On Tuesday, the Knights’ boys and girls teams swept Fultondale. The Lady Knights’ three seniors led the way again in a 47-28 win over Fultondale. White had 18 points, Welch had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Gache finished with nine points, seven rebounds and six blocks. The Westminster boys edged Fultondale 63-60 as well. Sam Bradford dropped 34 points and Houston Likens added 20 points.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Briarwood indoor track and field team competed at the Last Chance Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex over the weekend. For the girls, Adrienne Goolsby finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run. On the boys side, Jake Nunn won the 400-meter dash and the 4x400 relay team placed third. Riley Margene was fourth in the pole vault.
Chelsea was there as well. The Hornets’ top girl was Teanna Cason, who placed third in the 3,200 and eighth in the 1,600. For the boys, Miles Brush was 10th in the 3,200 and 15th in the 1,600.
Oak Mountain’s top girl at the Last Chance Invitational was Evie Bell, who was fourth in the 800-meter run. On the boys side, Aaron Brooks was third in the 60, while Hunter Wright was sixth in the 1,600.
The state meet is this weekend at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
WRESTLING
Last Tuesday, the Chelsea wrestling team fell to Helena 68-12. On Thursday, Chelsea fell to Oak Mountain 46-36 but edged out Pell City 42-40. In the other match on Thursday, Oak Mountain defeated Pell City 60-15.
