Chelsea vs Briarwood Girls Soccer

BASEBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood baseball team beat Shelby County 2-1 last Friday. Carson McKinney was great on the mound, striking out 11 batters in 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed one run on five hits in the outing.
Chelsea
The Chelsea baseball team’s only action last week came on Saturday, as the Hornets split a doubleheader with Benjamin Russell on Saturday. In the first game, the Hornets earned a 3-2 win. Connor Ball threw a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out 12 in seven innings of work. Chelsea fell 5-2 in the second game of the day.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain baseball team split a doubleheader with James Clemens at Jacksonville State on Thursday. The Eagles won the first game 6-1, behind a strong pitching performance from Cole Sester. Sester went the full seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Stephen Moraski had a pair of hits, including a triple and an RBI in the game. James Clemens earned a 2-1 win in the second game. Moraski pitched well, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out six in six innings of work.
SOFTBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood softball team began play last week with a wild 18-15 loss to McAdory. The Lions staked themselves to an 11-0 lead in the second inning but were unable to hang on. Maggie Flemming and Callie Mann each drove in two runs for the Lions.
Chelsea
Over the weekend, the Chelsea softball team played in Spain Park’s Jag Classic. On Friday, the Hornets split their pool games. In a 15-0 win over Mountain Brook, four players drove in multiple runs. Tyler Erwin homered and drove in three runs, while Karson Rich went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Bella Patterson and Jayden Buff drove in a pair of runs as well. Olivia Trout gave up two hits and struck out six batters in three innings.
The Hornets’ run in the tournament ended on Saturday morning in a 4-0 loss to Sumiton Christian.
Oak Mountain
Over the weekend, the Oak Mountain softball team played in Spain Park’s Jag Classic. The Eagles won both of their pool games on Friday in thrilling fashion. They beat Brookwood 9-8 in the first game. Riley Sullivan hit a grand slam and drove in five RBIs in the contest. In a 4-3 win over Pisgah, Oak Mountain got each of its runs from solo homers, including a walk-off homer from Dawn Autry. Abi Brown, Sullivan and Lizzy Zaelski also homered.
Oak Mountain’s tournament run ended on Saturday morning in a 2-1 loss to Enterprise. Lacy Marty was solid in the loss, as she allowed one hit and two unearned runs in five innings of work.
SOCCER
Briarwood
Briarwood’s boys soccer team finished last week with two wins, including an area win. Briarwood started the week with a slim, 2-1 win over Pelham on Tuesday. The Lions continued their winning ways with an area win over Indian Springs by a 3-2 margin. The Lions are now 1-1 in area play with a 7-3 overall record.
The Lady Lions picked up their first win of the season during the week. Briarwood fell on Tuesday to Chelsea, 5-1, but a bounce-back win helped out the Lady Lions on Friday, as they knocked off Indian Springs 7-1.
Chelsea
A big first half and a hat trick propelled the Chelsea girls soccer team to a 5-1 win over Briarwood last Tuesday.
Kailey Littleford led the Lady Hornets with three goals and an assist in the win.
The Lady Hornets kept control of the ball throughout most of the first half before scoring three goals in 12 minutes. Avery Burleson buried a shot, assisted by Littleford, to go up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Littleford found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Littleford continued to score, sending a shot in to give Chelsea a 3-0 halftime lead.
Briarwood struck first in the second half with a goal just over a minute into the half. Jolee Giadrosich scored the goal from an assist Anna Martin to shorten lead to 3-1.
After the Briarwood goal, Chelsea picked up the pace, with Haley Duca scoring a goal on a corner kick that deflected off a Briarwood player. Littleford then completed the hat trick, scoring her third goal of the contest to finish the scoring at 5-1 in favor of Chelsea.
The Lady Hornets followed up the win with another 5-1 win over area foe Pelham on Thursday.
Chelsea’s boys dropped their only contest of the week in an area match against Helena Friday night. Chelsea lost 2-1 dropping its overall record to 3-4 and an 0-1 record in area play.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain girls soccer team got one game during the week and made the most of it. Oak Mountain picked up a 4-1 win over James Clemens on Friday. Oak Mountain had one other game canceled due to inclement weather during the week.
The boys soccer team earned a win and a tie over the weekend. Oak Mountain tied with Mountain Brook, 1-1 Friday night, but the Eagles bounced back with a 3-2 win over Southside-Gadsden on Saturday.
TENNIS
Briarwood
Both Briarwood tennis teams improved during the week with wins over Pell City on Tuesday. The boys team took seven games to Pell City’s two to grab the team win. The girls won 8-1, nearly completing a sweep.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain girls tennis team fell to Hoover 8-1 on Wednesday.
