FOOTBALL
The local football teams were on the field last Friday. Briarwood and Chelsea squared off against each other in the Class 6A, Region 5 opener, with Briarwood earning a 20-3 victory. Briarwood improved to 2-1 overall, while Chelsea is now 1-2. Click here for a full recap of the game.
Oak Mountain traveled to Gadsden City for a Class 7A, Region 3 game and came away with a 38-23 win, as the Eagles piled up over 360 rushing yards on the evening. Click here for a recap of the game. Oak Mountain is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in region play.
This Friday, Briarwood hosts Woodlawn, Chelsea travels to Homewood and Oak Mountain hosts Vestavia Hills in region action.
VOLLEYBALL
The Briarwood volleyball team played one match last week, losing to Chelsea on Thursday in an area match. This week, the Lions are at Shelby County on Tuesday for a tri-match with Calera. They host Mountain Brook on Thursday as well in an area matchup.
The Chelsea volleyball team began last week with an area win over Homewood in straight sets (25-23, 25-10, 27-25). Chelsea also defeated Briarwood 3-0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-19) in another area match on Thursday.
On Saturday, the Hornets rolled through the Corner Clash to win the tournament. Along the way, Chelsea beat Corner (25-13, 25-7), Brooks (25-20, 25-8), Ramsay (25-22, 14-25, 15-12), Paul Bryant (25-6, 25-3), Dora (25-11, 25-13) and Ramsay again (25-19, 25-17).
This week, Chelsea hosts the Hornet Quad Match on Saturday.
The Oak Mountain volleyball team celebrated senior night last Tuesday and earned a dominant area win over Tuscaloosa County in straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-4). Avery Fletcher contributed 31 assists and four aces, while Landry Frisch had 17 kills, a .583 hitting percentage, a 2.38 passing percentage, a block and six digs. Lacee Sheaffer had an ace, 11 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, 2.17 passing percentage, one block, one assist and eight digs.
This week, Oak Mountain hosts Hoover on Tuesday and travels to Calera on Thursday. The Eagles play at Bayside Academy’s tournament over the weekend.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Briarwood and Chelsea’s cross-country teams participated in the Warrior 2 Mile at Thompson on Thursday. In the boys race, Briarwood came home third and Chelsea finished fourth. Chelsea’s girls placed second, with Briarwood finishing fifth. Chelsea’s Miles Brush won the boys race, with Briarwood’s Trent Malloy and Joseph Bell crossing second and third. Thomas Ludwig from Chelsea placed ninth. In the girls race, Chelsea’s Cady McPhail was third overall, while Adrienne Goolsby from Briarwood was seventh. Also from Briarwood, Bela Doss placed 10th.
