FOOTBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood football team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 42-12 win over Class 5A, Region 4 foe John Carroll on Friday. The Lions will host Parker this week.
Chelsea
Chelsea fell just short to Helena, 28-21, on Friday. The Hornets will continue their search for their first win at Homewood this week.
Oak Mountain
Oak Mountain was shut out by Mountain Brook, 21-0, on Thursday, as the Eagles dropped their fifth straight contest. The Eagles head to Tuscaloosa County this week.
Spain Park
Spain Park fell to 0-4 in region play with a 35-7 loss to Thompson on Friday. The Jags will host Hoover on Friday in another Class 7A, Region 3 contest.
VOLLEYBALL
Briarwood
Briarwood’s volleyball team went 1-2 last week and the Lions now sit at 22-15 overall on the season. On Tuesday, the Lions fell to Clay-Chalkville in straight sets (16-25, 9-25, 21-25). Briarwood traveled to Homewood on Thursday for a tri-match with the Patriots and Hueytown. The Lions beat Hueytown (25-21, 12-25, 15-12) and fell to Homewood (14-25, 16-26). Some notable stats from the week:
- Kaley Bruce: 3 kills, 24 set assists, 13 digs
- Audrey O'Brien: 4 kills, 3 set assists, 5 aces, 29 digs
- Anna Grace Pattillo: 13 kills, 5 aces, 12 digs, 2 blocks
- Emma Crawford: 16 kills, 2 blocks
Briarwood is back in action on Oct. 16 at Chelsea.
Chelsea
Chelsea split the four matches it played this week. The Hornets began the week on Monday with a straight-sets victory over John Carroll (25-18, 25-12, 25-15). They won one and lost one in a tri-match with Ramsay and Hoover on Tuesday. Chelsea knocked off Ramsay (25-14, 25-22) and took a set from Hoover before falling in three (25-23, 19-25, 8-15). On Thursday, the Hornets fell in four sets to Class 6A, Area 8 foe Pelham (23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 21-25). Some notable stats from the week:
- Victoria Schmer: 71 digs, 19 aces, 10 assists
- Hope Wright: 36 kills, 17 digs, 7 aces
- Bailey Drew McIntyre: 44 assists, 34 digs
Oak Mountain
Oak Mountain put together a solid week, improving to 20-16 overall. The Eagles began the week with a four-set Class 7A, Area 5 win over Tuscaloosa County (25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-9). On Thursday, they fell to Thompson (23-25, 13-25, 22-25) in another area contest. Over the weekend, the Eagles played in Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa’s tournament. Oak Mountain knocked off Montevallo (25-14, 25-11), Arab (21-25, 25-22, 15-11), Hewitt-Trussville (25-15, 25-22) and Curry (25-19, 25-15) before falling to Hillcrest (21-25, 25-13, 10-15). Some notable stats from the week:
- Leah Nielsen: 44 kills, 7 aces, 17 digs, 9 blocks
- Josie Ohlson: 26 kills, 6 blocks
- Maddie Moss: 9 kills, 56 assists, 7 aces, 16 digs
This week, Oak Mountain hosts Northridge on Tuesday and Helena on Thursday before playing in Louisiana over the weekend.
Spain Park
Spain Park put together a perfect 3-0 mark last week. The Jags began the week by sweeping a tri-match on Tuesday, beating Montgomery Academy (25-23, 19-25, 15-7) and Thompson (25-18, 25-21). On Thursday, the Jags pulled off a big Class 7A, Area 6 victory, as they knocked off Mountain Brook in four sets (27-25, 27-29, 25-20, 26-24). Some notable stats from the week:
- Sha’Kevia Hogan: 35 kills, 47 digs, 2 aces, 4 blocks
- Allie DeSantis: 70 assists, 28 digs, 8 aces
- Audrey Rothman: 27 kills, 39 digs, 14 assists, 7 blocks
- Paris Morris: 22 kills, 8 blocks, 8 aces
- Lexie Fowler: 36 digs
This week, Spain Park hosts John Carroll on Tuesday and Vestavia Hills on Thursday before playing in the Margaret Blalock Tournament over the weekend.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Briarwood
Briarwood competed in the Bronze race of the prestigious Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville on Saturday. Trent Malloy continued his outstanding campaign so far with a second-place finish, completing the 5,000-meter run in 16:39.95. Chloe Finocchiaro finished fourth in the girls race with a time of 20:32.08. Lauren Musachia (30th, 21:43.79), Cady McPhail (35th, 22:06.84) and Adrienne Goolsby (36th, 22:08.64) also helped lead the girls team to a fourth-place finish.
Chelsea
Chelsea’s cross-country teams also competed at the Jesse Owens Classic. Teanna Cason finished 11th in the girls Silver race, posting a time of 20:29.74. On the boys side, Miles Brush (38th, 17:45.09) and Cade Neuberger (52nd, 17:53.53) posted notable finishes.
Spain Park
Spain Park’s cross-country teams participated in the Jesse Owens Classic. Mackenzie Culpepper (32nd, 19:44.34) and Jacob Warner (sixth, 15:56.34) ran in the Gold race and posted good times.
