FOOTBALL
The Briarwood football team moved on last Friday night, cruising past Marbury in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Click here for the recap of the game.
This Friday, Briarwood makes the long trip to Jackson for a second-round contest.
BASKETBALL
Westminster-Oak Mountain
The Westminster-Oak Mountain girls basketball team opened its season with a 50-22 win over Indian Springs last Thursday. Morgan White led the way for the Lady Knights with 18 points, with Virginia Welch chipping in 10 points and four defensive rebounds. Elizabeth Mann contributed three offensive rebounds, Laura Cavan Smith had four assists and Reave Metcalf picked up four steals.
This week, the Lady Knights play a trio of home games. They host Holy Spirit on Tuesday, Montevallo on Friday and Prattville Christian on Saturday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams opened their seasons last Thursday with wins over Minor. The girls team picked up a 49-21 win behind 14 points from Jordan Parker. Pressley Rains chipped in 12 points and Sydney Schwallie had nine points.
The boys team grinded out a 54-51 win. Bryant Royster led the scoring charge with 14 points, followed by Andrew Messier’s 10 and KJ Hall’s nine points.
This week, both Chelsea teams host Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday, play at Vestavia Hills on Thursday and host Wenonah on Friday. On Saturday, the boys play Scottsboro in an event held at Ramsay.
The Oak Mountain girls basketball team will also begin play this week, as the Lady Eagles host Mountain Brook on Tuesday, Homewood on Thursday and Midfield on Saturday.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The local cross-country teams completed their seasons last Saturday at the state meet in Danville. The Briarwood boys and girls teams each finished third in Class 5A. Chelsea’s boys placed 11th and the girls 12th in Class 6A. Oak Mountain’s girls came home sixth in 7A.
