FOOTBALL
The Briarwood football team began its playoff run with a 42-28 victory over Valley in the first round of the playoffs. The Lions travel to Vigor for a second-round game this Friday.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Briarwood, Chelsea and Oak Mountain’s cross-country teams completed their seasons at the state meet on Saturday in Moulton. Briarwood’s girls finished second in the Class 5A meet, while the boys finished sixth. Chelsea’s girls finished 10th in 6A and Oak Mountain’s boys finished eighth in 7A.
For Briarwood, the girls posted two of the top three finishers, with Cady McPhail crossing the line second overall in 19:29.22, while Chloe Finocchiaro was third in 19:33.44. Adrienne Goolsby finished 12th (20:25.24) and Lauren Musachia was 16th (20:33.98) to give the team four top-20 runners. Morgan Harris (70th, 22:37.55), Chloe Lovvorn (75th, 22:46.82), Madeline Simmerman (80th, 22:57.25), Anna Ferguson (95th, 23:33.81), Grace Lovell (98th, 23:45.31) and Stella Bell (113th, 24:24.49) all ran as well.
On the boys side, Trent Malloy posted a blistering time of 15:52.35 to win the race. Following Malloy were Patrick Hnizdil (51st, 18:10.54), Sam Candler (55th, 18:11.93), Luke Thompson (57th, 18:12.71), Jay Greene (59th, 18:14.2), Joseph Bell (60th, 18:15.34), Matthew Earnest (78th, 18:52.88), Joseph Hopkins (79th, 18:54.21), David Houston (102nd, 19:30.34) and Jackson Moore (131st, 20:20.73).
Chelsea had a pair of boys qualify as individuals, as Cade Neuberger finished 39th overall with a time of 17:34.5. Miles Brush finished 49th in 17:44.3. For the girls, Teanna Cason posted an eighth-place finish, coming home in 20:02. Other runners for the Hornets were Nakia Coleman (51st, 21:53.14), Esther Rabenau (57th, 21:59.54), Avery Thompson (103rd, 23:17.99), Lauren Thompson (122nd, 23:44.44), Morgan Williamson (153rd, 24:36.31), Samantha Kennedy (160th, 24:54.99), McKenzie Gunn (169th, 25:10.84), Emma Anderson (170th, 25:12.18) and Maggie Masters (181st, 25:48.71).
Two Oak Mountain girls qualified as individuals, as Evie Bell (21st, 19:35.33) and Emma Grace Phillips (40th, 20:21.42) performed well. The boys team had four runners in the top 40, as it was led by Walker Cole (21st, 16:23.24), Bryce Keefover (35th, 16:34.85), Jonah Barrett (37th, 16:36.54) and Hansen McCown (38th, 16:38.64). Following them were Kenny Chavez (79th, 17:26.84), Reese Bell (80th, 17:26.98), Michael Marvin (110th, 17:57.98), Skylar Johnston (120th, 18:10.57), Connor Moore (135th, 18:42.82) and Josh Stidfole (155th, 19:15.42).
BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams begin play on Tuesday at Sylacauga.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams began their season last week, as the boys and girls fell to Vestavia Hills on Thursday. The girls fell, 61-39, and were led by Jordan Parker’s 16 points. Suzanne Ridgeway chipped in seven points. The boys fell, 56-25, with Daniel Washington leading the Hornets with eight points.
On Saturday, the Hornets boys fell to Sacred Heart, 67-53, in the Ramsay Tip-Off Showcase. Washington had 20 points and Jacob Tierney added 11. This week, the Hornets visit Gardendale on Tuesday.
Oak Mountain
Oak Mountain’s girls basketball team began play last week with a pair of contests in the McAdory Lady Jacket Tip-Off Invitational. On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles knocked off Clay-Chalkville, 59-38. Hannah Edwards and Kailey Rory each scored 16 points to lead the way, while Abi Brown and Emily Cruce added 10 apiece. Taniyah Smith scored six points off the bench as well.
On Wednesday, Oak Mountain fell to McAdory, 69-59. Rory paced the team with 29 points, followed by 17 points from Edwards. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
This week, the girls continue play and the boys begin their season. Both teams play on Tuesday, with the girls at Homewood and the boys hosting Leeds. On Thursday, both teams host Pelham. Over the weekend, the girls begin play in the Bryant Bank Classic at Hewitt-Trussville and the boys play in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational at Mortimer Jordan.
