Oak Mountain vs. Homewood Girls Basketball

BASKETBALL
Briarwood
Briarwood’s boys basketball team competed in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational at Mortimer Jordan last week. On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Lions opened the tournament with a 60-44 loss to Homewood but rebounded to secure fifth place in the tournament.
Hayden Lamey and Jack Dicen led the Lions in scoring, as they secured wins last Monday and Tuesday. They knocked off Gardendale 52-46 on Monday behind 17 points from Lamey and 16 from Dicen. On Tuesday, Briarwood beat Moody 73-66, as Lamey scored 20 points and Dicen added 16.
This week, both Briarwood teams host Altamont on Tuesday and Calera on Thursday.
Chelsea
Both Chelsea basketball teams competed in the Marble City Classic, a round-robin event hosted by Sylacauga, last week. The girls team won two of the three games it played. On Monday, the Lady Hornets fell to Childersburg 48-35. Sydney Schwallie was the only double-figure scorer for the team, as she scored 10 points. Jordan Parker and Pressley Rains each scored eight.
Chelsea rebounded with a 52-37 win over Sylacauga on Tuesday. Rains poured in 16 points and Mackenzie Titus added 12. The Lady Hornets dominated Cleburne County, 57-25, on Wednesday, behind 24 points from Rains. Ellen Fleming chipped in 14 points as well.
The boys team went 1-2 on the week, but started with a 63-55 win over Childersburg on Monday. Daniel Washington had a huge game, as he scored 33 points in a game that the Hornets trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter. On Tuesday, the Hornets fell 66-57 to Sylacauga. Washington had 14 points, followed by 12 from Andrew Messier and 11 from Jacob Tierney. Talladega beat Chelsea 63-55 on Wednesday. The Hornets were led by Washington’s 20 points and Michael Gibbs added 14.
This week, Chelsea hosts Oak Mountain on Tuesday, travels to Clay-Chalkville on Thursday and hosts Thompson on Friday.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams participated in Thanksgiving week tournaments last week, with the girls playing at Hewitt-Trussville’s Husky Thanksgiving Tournament powered by Trussville Gas and Water and the boys participating in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational at Mortimer Jordan.
The boys team opened up the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 17, with a 73-64 win over Gardendale, and followed that up with wins on Monday and Tuesday to claim the tournament title. On Monday, the Eagles knocked off Homewood 57-42. Drew Dunn led the way with 17 points, with Zane Nelson hitting all seven of his free throw attempts and adding 12 points. Turner Youngblood had nine points and four assists.
In the final on Tuesday, the Eagles cruised to a 59-44 win over Pelham to improve to 5-0 on the season. Dunn scored 17 points again, followed by Youngblood’s 12 and 11 points from Stone Evers. Blake Floyd and Chris Brown led Pelham with 14 points each.
The girls team opened the Hewitt-Trussville tournament on Saturday, Nov. 17, with a 72-54 win over Woodlawn. But last Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Eagles dropped both contests to top-flight teams. On Monday, Hewitt-Trussville ran away with a 72-30 win. The Lady Eagles played with Wenonah on Tuesday, but ultimately fell 62-55. Kailey Rory led Oak Mountain with 21 points. Hannah Edwards scored 11 and Clara Fuller chipped in nine.
This week is a busy one for Oak Mountain. The Eagles host Mortimer Jordan on Monday, travel to Chelsea on Tuesday and Hewitt-Trussville on Friday.
