On Monday, longtime Briarwood head football coach Fred Yancey announced his retirement after 29 years leading the Lions.
BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams began last week on Tuesday with a sweep of Altamont. The girls improved to 2-0 on the year with a dominant 43-18 victory. Jalen Hunter scored 12 points for the Lady Lions and Caroline Mays added 10 points. The boys rolled to an 80-55 win behind big nights from Jack Dicen and Hayden Lamey. Lamey led the way with 23 points for the Lions, with Dicen pouring in 20 of his own. Chance Beard chipped in 11.
On Thursday, both Briarwood teams suffered narrow defeats to Calera. The girls fell 39-31, as Emily Scott led the team with 12 points on the night, followed by six from Marylane Graham. The boys dropped a 66-59 decision despite 16 points from Dicen.
The girls now hold a 2-1 record and the boys sit at 3-3 on the year. This week, the Lions host Vincent on Tuesday and head to Altamont on Friday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams opened last week’s action with a home date against Oak Mountain on Tuesday. The Lady Hornets began things with a 57-45 loss to the Lady Eagles, and the boys lost 66-42. Daniel Washington led the Hornets with 14 points and Robert Marquet added eight.
The Hornets hosted Clay-Chalkville on Thursday, with the girls team suffering a 49-28 defeat to the Cougars. Monika Johnson led all scorers with 21 points for the Cougars, while Pressley Rains scored 11 and Jordan Parker chipped in nine for Chelsea. The boys picked up a narrow 54-53 win. Jacob Tierney scored 13 points and Washington added 11. Clay-Chalkville had three scorers in double figures, led by Dayon Bryant’s 23 points.
The results were flipped on Friday night, when Chelsea hosted Thompson. The girls cruised to a 56-34 win over the Warriors. Sydney Schwallie led the way with 13 points, followed by 11 points from Katie Goss. The boys fell to Thompson 63-58, despite Washington leading the way with 22 points. Matthew Lanzi scored 13 for the Hornets and Luke Haywood scored a career-high eight points off the bench.
The girls have evened their record to 4-4 on the year, while the boys are now 2-7 after a tough early-season schedule. This week, Chelsea travels to Tuscaloosa County on Monday and hosts Homewood on Thursday.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams began last week at home against Mortimer Jordan on Monday. The Lady Eagles picked up a 55-47 win over the Blue Devils, as Hannah Edwards posted 16 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Kailey Rory scored 11 points and dished out six assists. Abi Brown scored nine as well. The boys team suffered its first loss of the season in a 46-44 defeat. Turner Youngblood led all scorers with 18 points for the Eagles. Josh Burns scored 13 for Mortimer Jordan.
The Eagles played again on Tuesday, as both teams swept Chelsea. The Lady Eagles rolled to a 57-45 win, led by Edwards’ 22 points. Rory scored 18 and Brown chipped in eight. Oak Mountain’s boys rebounded from the loss on Monday to pick up a 66-42 win. Noah Young led three double-digit scorers for the Eagles, as he posted 15 points and six rebounds. Drew Dunn added 14 points and Will Shaver tallied 11 points and six boards. The Eagles held Chelsea to just three points in the first quarter.
Oak Mountain paid a visit to Hewitt-Trussville on Friday, but came up empty-handed. The girls suffered a 66-46 defeat. Edwards led all scorers with 26 points in the game. The boys team fell by a 68-62 score. Dunn (12), Shaver (11) and Young (10) all eclipsed double digits for the Eagles.
The boys team sits with a 6-2 record, and the girls are 6-4. This week, Oak Mountain hosts Helena on Tuesday and Vestavia Hills on Friday.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Briarwood and Oak Mountain indoor track and field teams began their seasons on Saturday at the Magic City Invitational, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Here are some notable performances:
Briarwood

- Jay Kynerd: fourth in 60-meter dash (7.28)
- Jake Nunn: won 400-meter dash (50.04)
- Nicholas Robson: third in 60-meter hurdles (9.56)

- Nicole Payne: second in 60-meter dash (7.67), won 400 (55.43)
- Girls relay: third in 4x200-meter relay (1:47.88)
- Aaron Brooks: fourth in 60-meter dash (7.12), sixth in 400 (52.67)
- Glynel Humphrey: seventh in 60-meter dash (7.19), third in 400 (50.86)
