BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams earned a sweep of Altamont last Tuesday. The girls earned a 44-25 win, with Emily Scott scoring 13 points to lead the way. Anna Martin added 11 points in the victory. The boys maintained their unbeaten record with a 58-48 triumph. Landon Nuyt scored 12 points and Hayden Lamey scored 11.
The Lions hosted Calera on Friday evening and earned a split. The Lady Lions used a strong defensive performance to notch a 43-27 victory. Maddie Vaughn led the team with 15 points on the night, with Bennett Shaw scoring seven in support. The boys team was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in a tight 70-64 loss. Nuyt led the Lions with 21 points on the night, with Chance Beard scoring 16 points and Lamey going for 13.
Briarwood’s boys are 8-1 on the season and the girls are 6-1. This week, the Lions host Sylacauga on Friday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams began a busy week of play last week with a trip to Sylacauga on Monday. The Lady Hornets got scoring contributions from nine players in a 52-23 win, with Jordan Parker leading the way with 18 points on the night. The boys team suffered a 67-55, as the Hornets were unable to hold onto the lead and were outscored 24-9 in the fourth quarter. Bryant Royster led the team with 16 points and KJ Hall knocked down 5-of-7 3-pointers to notch 15 points.
Chelsea was right back in action on Tuesday and claimed victory over Montevallo. The girls cruised to a dominant 61-28 win behind 14 points from Mary Henley Carney. Jordan Parker scored 11 points and Mackenzie Titus added nine. The boys earned a hard-fought 55-49 win, as Caleb Moore came off the bench and poured in a game-high 25 points for the Hornets. Andrew Messier scored nine points as well.
The Chelsea girls dominated en route to a 59-20 win over Thompson on Thursday. Pressley Rains led the way with 14 points, while Sydney Schwallie scored 11 and Titus added 10 to join her in double figures.
Chelsea capped off a busy week with a trip to Clay-Chalkville on Friday night. The evening didn’t go as the Hornets hoped, with both teams falling. The Lady Cougars knocked off Chelsea 46-45, led by a great effort from Vonquice Wilson, who poured in 27 points. Ellen Fleming scored 12 points to lead the Lady Hornets and Schwallie added 11. In the boys game, Clay-Chalkville pulled away with a 50-42 victory. Daniel Beachem scored 17 points to lead the Cougars, with Isiah Daniel and Donovan Shangase joining him in double figures with 16 and 14, respectively. Moore led the Hornets with 14 points.
Chelsea’s girls are now 12-3 on the season, while the boys are 6-9 overall. This week, the Hornets host Sylacauga on Tuesday, the boys travel to Thompson on Thursday and the girls compete in Spain Park’s Chevron Lady Jag Classic over the latter half of the week.
Oak Mountain
Spain Park and Oak Mountain’s boys teams squared off on Thursday night, with Spain Park emerging with a 52-48 win. Spain Park’s Cam Crawford led all scorers with 22 points in the contest, with Josh Harrington adding 16 points. Oak Mountain’s Wilder Evers had 15 points and Zane Nelson added 13 points.
Mountain Brook took down Oak Mountain’s girls 50-30 on Thursday. Harriet Adams led the Lady Spartans with 11 points, with Helen Dorough adding nine points and Natalie Houser scoring eight points.
Oak Mountain and Vestavia Hills squared off on Friday night, with the Rebels claiming victory in both varsity games. In the girls, game, the Lady Rebels ran away with a 70-38 victory. Emma Smith led Vestavia with 20 points, with Anna Wood adding 13 points and Alison Stubbs scoring 10. The Vestavia boys overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to win 53-51. Win Miller led all scorers with 16 points, with the Oak Mountain trio of Nelson, Evan Smith and Noah Young each scoring nine.
Oak Mountain’s boys are now 6-5 overall on the season, while the girls are 3-9. This week, the boys face Wenonah on Tuesday at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena, as part of the Chick-fil-A Birmingham Showcase. In the back half of the week, the boys will host the Oak Mountain Invite and the girls will play in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament.
Westminster-Oak Mountain
The Westminster-Oak Mountain girls basketball team picked up a couple wins last week. On Tuesday, the Lady Knights beat Jefferson Christian 45-27. Morgan White posted 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Reave Metcalf was also in double figures, with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists. Megan Gache had a solid night, with six points, six boards, two assists, two steals and six blocks. Virginia Welch also chipped in six points, 14 rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block.
On Thursday, Westminster knocked off Appalachian 50-24 to improve to 3-0 in area play. Three Lady Knights reached double digits, led by Metcalf, who had 14 points, three boards and one assist, steal and block. Gache had 13 points, five boards, one assist, three steals and four blocks. Morgan White posted 11 points, two rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Last Monday, Oak Mountain beat Vestavia Hills 35-26. Over the weekend, Oak Mountain placed eighth in the McCallie Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Tennessee.
WRESTLING
Last Tuesday, the Chelsea wrestling team competed in a tri-match with Hueytown and Wetumpka. The Hornets beat Hueytown 69-0 and fell to Wetumpka 55-22. On Thursday, the Hornets dropped both ends of another tri-match, losing to Jasper 42-40 and Tuscaloosa County 59-24. On Saturday, Chelsea hosted the Hornet Duals, with the A team winning the event and the B team earning 11th place.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The local indoor track and field teams competed in the Holiday Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex over the weekend. For Briarwood, Adrienne Goolsby was seventh in the 3,200-meter run and Jake Nunn placed fifth in the 60-meter dash. For Chelsea, Teanna Cason won the 3,200 with a time of 11:51, while placing fourth in the 1,600. For Oak Mountain, Emarie McNair finished seventh in the 400-meter dash. Harrison Dimick was third in the shot put and the 4x200 boys relay team was sixth.
