Briarwood Christian School's volleyball team has raced out to a 9-1 start, with the Lions' lone loss coming to McGill-Toolen in the quarterfinals of the Boddie Tournament last weekend. Along the way, Briarwood picked up wins over Prattville Christian (3-0), St. John Paul II (2-0), UMS-Wright (2-0), Shades Valley (2-0), Northwest Rankin (2-0), Bob Jones (2-0), St. Mary's (2-0), Westminster Christian (2-0) and Madison Academy (2-0).
Julie Roberts led the charge with 75 kills, 44 digs and 21 aces, and reached 1,000 career kills during the Boddie Tournament. Setter Noelle Suellentrop ran the offense with 163 assists and 42 digs. Helen Morrison added 56 kills and 47 digs, Lily Nelson posted 72 digs, Coley Barnes tallied 38 kills, 14 aces and eight blocks, Leighton Hendley added 36 kills and Peyton Gibbons chipped in 20 kills and 13 blocks.
Briarwood hosts ACA on Wednesday, Aug. 27, before traveling to Indian Springs on Sept. 1.
Elsewhere, Chelsea stands at 4-4 on the season. Senior outside hitter Alexis Rudolph has led the way with 56 kills, 42 digs, 12 blocks and eight aces, while senior libero Abigail Price has anchored the back row with 45 digs, 11 assists, 10 aces and four kills.
Chelsea travels to Pell City on Thursday for a tri-match that also includes Oak Mountain, then heads to the Guntersville Tournament in Albertville over the weekend before closing the stretch Sept. 1 at Sylacauga.
Spain Park has jumped out to a 9-1 start. Peyton Harrington has led the way with 97 kills, 59 digs and 20 aces, while Chloe Shumate has added 89 kills and six blocks. Camdyn Kyes has anchored the back row with 101 digs, 107 receptions and eight aces. Setter Lynlee Franks has directed the offense with 99 assists to go with 39 digs and four aces, and Sarah Latham has chipped in 25 kills, 11 blocks and seven aces.
Spain Park travels to Bob Jones on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before taking part in the outdoor match against Mountain Brook Saturday at 5 p.m.
