The South Shelby Chamber of Commerce recognized the business owners and community members in South Shelby County at its annual Diamond Awards.
The 10th Annual Diamond Awards were held at Columbiana United Methodist Church. Nominations for business of the year, new business of the year and citizen of the year were accepted through November.
“We were so overwhelmed with the amount of nominations we got this year,” said Chamber Executive Director April Stone.
Davis Drug was named the winner of Business of the Year. When Gene Rowley of APH Radio announced the nominees, he noted that Davis Drug has been in the Columbiana community for 60 years. The nominator thanked Davis Drug for its great service to the community.
“A pillar, a gathering spot in the Columbiana community,” the nominator said.
New Business of the Year winner was Simply Infused of Mt Laurel, which was opened by Cheryl Harper in April.
"Cheryl left a career with Hewlett Packard and had a dream to open this shop and be an engaged part of her community," Rowley said. "In fact, that is her goal for 2016, to create more business partnerships."
Citizen of the Year winner was Shari Hyde. Hyde was a therapist at St. Vincent’s Hospital for 20 years and has been clinic director at On Mark for three. Hyde was at On Mark in the Narrows the day an 18-wheeler hit the SUV carrying a 25-year-old mother and her infant. Hyde helped pull the infant safely from the car and prayed with the driver of the 18-wheeler.
On Mark locations in Helena, Moody, Altadena Square, Hoover and the Narrows are accepting donations for the infant, Nathan, and his father.
The Diamond Awards was also a time to recognize the outgoing and incoming board members in the Chamber. Outgoing board members were Donna Smelcer with Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Mary Deloach with Comfort Keepers. Incoming board members include Shelby County Commissioner Corley Ellis and Bobby Madison with Alabama Power.
