Staff members from Birmingham FCA meet in their year-old office space in November. The organization moved in after building owner David Brogden offered the space, Metro Director Bill Gray said, and has since allowed for more opportunities for FCA.
In 2016, Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Jefferson and Shelby County didn’t have an official space.
“Anywhere that had Wi-Fi was where we’d meet,” said Bill Gray, metro director for the Birmingham Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
They would meet where they could, Gray said, but that led to limitations on how they could grow their staff. That changed in January 2017, when the Brogdon Group offered FCA a space in their building off of Resource Drive. Since they moved in, Gray said, the space has felt like home, providing a solid foundation on which they hope to grow.
Moving to a building meant they had proper storage for all of their resources, said area representative Teresa Chamblee, and allows for a meeting place for not only staff, but also school representatives. The central location, off U.S. 280, also makes for convenient travel between their 90 campuses in the greater Birmingham area.
“Being here on 280 is such a good space because of how many schools where we use 280 to get to them,” Chamblee said.
They have a staff of five — including Gray, Chamblee, UAB campus/area rep Tavon Arrington, UAB campus rep Sarah Witkowski and area rep Sarah Gackle, but Gray said they hope to double their team in order to reach more students. The building offers room to grow, Gray said, and they are thankful to have the space for fellowship.
“This space is a tremendous blessing, first and foremost,” Gray said. “… We’re very thankful.”
