One of Chelsea’s youngest fans during a game between Chelsea and Pell City on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, at Pell City High School.
PELL CITY – At 5 foot 6, Collier Blair was clearly not the biggest player on the field of Pete Rich Stadium. But no one stood taller with the game on the line for the Chelsea High School football team.
The junior running back scored on runs of 63 and 73 yards in the fourth quarter, as the visitors headed home with a 24-14 victory over Pell City.
The victory evens the Chelsea record at 5-5 ahead of its Class 6A playoff opener next week at Oxford.
“I’ve had one or two nights where I’ve had big runs but this is one of the biggest ones I’ve had,” Blair said. “We just wanted to run our normal plays and try to run them better than we did in the first half. We broke a couple of tackles and got into the end zone.”
After a scoreless first period, the Panthers got on the board with Mitchell Gosett’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Carson Walker in the second quarter. The Hornets knotted the score at 7-7 when senior quarterback Caleb Moore executed a nifty fake and darted 19 yards into the end zone.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Pell City’s David Keith dashed 59 yards to reestablish a touchdown lead for the home team. But the fourth quarter belonged to the Hornets.
Blair got it going first, bursting through the line virtually untouched on his way to a 73-yard touchdown. Cooper Neal followed with a 27-yard field goal before Blair ended the scoring with his 63-yard jaunt.
Chelsea coach Dustin Goodwin gave the Panthers and their game plan credit for his team’s slow start.
“It took us a little to adjust to it,” he said. “I think the field conditions being a little slick had something to do with it. I’m proud of our kids and the adjustment we were able to make at halftime and the execution we had in the second half for sure.”
“We were having some success running the ball. We just had to eliminate some of our negative plays.”
Goodwin was not surprised by Blair’s showing.
“He’s been that consistent and that good for the last three years,” the coach said. “He means a lot to us. He does a good job and I couldn’t be prouder of him and the guys up front paving the way for him.”
