BASKETBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood basketball teams began Class 5A, Area 8 play last Tuesday evening as they hosted Ramsay. The Lady Lions fell 49-19 and the boys dropped a 74-64 contest. In the boys game, Hayden Lamey led the Lions with 18 points, while Ryan Donohoo chipped in 12 points, Chance Beard scored 10 and Cal Reebals added nine points.
Both Briarwood teams got back in the win column on Friday night at John Carroll. The Lady Lions prevailed 40-37 in overtime and the boys held on for a 55-48 victory. For the boys, Beard led the way with 16 points and Lamey added 15 points.
The Briarwood boys are 13-3 overall and the girls are 10-5, with both teams sitting at 1-1 in area play. This week, the Lions host Woodlawn on Tuesday and travel to Ramsay on Friday for area games before traveling to Sylacauga on Saturday.
Chelsea
The Chelsea basketball teams opened up Class 6A, Area 8 play last Tuesday by hosting Pelham. The girls team pulled off a hard-fought win over the Panthers, winning 66-63 in double overtime. For the Lady Hornets, Pressley Rains led the way with 21 points and Jordan Parker added 20 points of her own. Victoria West paced Pelham with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Chelsea boys had an easier time of things in a 56-41 victory. Caleb Moore continued his impressive run of late, dropping 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Thomas scored 10 points and KJ Hall chipped in nine points.
Chelsea faced off against Calera on Friday night, with the girls team cruising to a 58-35 victory. For the girls, Ellen Fleming notched 14 points to lead the way, with Parker and Sydney Schwallie adding 11 points in support. The boys dropped a 68-63 heartbreaker in double overtime.
The Chelsea girls are 17-4 overall, 2-0 in area play. The boys are 10-12, 1-1. This week, the Hornets travel to Helena on Tuesday and to Pelham on Friday for two more area contests.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain basketball teams started play in Class 7A, Area 5 last Tuesday, as they hosted Hoover. The Lady Eagles didn’t have much success in a 75-22 loss, but the boys pulled off a 63-50 win over the Bucs. Oak Mountain had four guys in double figures, with Will Shaver leading the way with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Zane Nelson had 15 points and seven rebounds, Evan Smith finished with 14 points and six assists, and Noah Young went for 11 points and eight boards.
Oak Mountain swept Tuscaloosa County on Friday evening, with the Lady Eagles earning a much-needed 59-52 win over the Wildcats. Abi Brown led the charge with 22 points and Abby Gordon notched 19 points. The boys had an easy time of it in a 60-36 victory. Nelson led the way with 19 points and four assists, with Young adding 11 points and six rebounds and Smith going for eight points and six assists.
The Oak Mountain boys are now 14-7 overall, 2-0 in area play. The girls are 6-14, 1-1. This week, the Eagles remain in area play, at Thompson on Tuesday and at home against Hoover on Friday.
Westminster-Oak Mountain
The Westminster School at Oak Mountain’s girls basketball team began play last week with a 65-37 win over Jefferson Christian. The Lady Knights got big contributions from their three seniors. Morgan White led the charge with 25 points, three rebounds and five assists, while Virginia Welch added 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Megan Gache also chipped in nine points, four rebounds and five assists.
WRESTLING
The Chelsea wrestling team swept the Class 6A, Region 5 duals last Thursday. The Hornets notched wins over Pelham (65-12), Helena (45-31), Homewood (53-20) and Minor (66-18).
Oak Mountain swept a tri-match on Tuesday, beating Prattville 69-6 and Tuscaloosa County 42-25. On Wednesday, the Eagles then beat Hoover 60-15. Over the weekend, Oak Mountain placed third in the Southeastern Pools at Thompson.
