Here's a look back at the last week in Briarwood, Chelsea and Oak Mountain high school sports.
BASEBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began play last week with a thrilling area win over Chelsea on Tuesday, with the Huskies walking off winners, 8-7. Jack Ollis had the walk-off hit in the seventh inning for the Huskies and drove in a pair of runs for the game. Kurt Kizer tallied 3 hits and hit a double, while Carson Wideman went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Colby Durden went 5 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits, with 8 strikeouts. Will Argo earned the win. For Chelsea, Jackson Morgan and Kaleb Hester each knocked in a pair of runs. Chris McNeill, Walker Thomas and Gannon Pharr tallied RBIs as well. Paxton Stallings hit a double and Logan Moller threw 3 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts.
The Spain Park baseball team picked up an area win last Tuesday over Oak Mountain 5-3. Cole Edwards hit a home run for the Jags, while Jacob Tobias picked up a couple hits with 2 runs batted in. Clay Spencer tallied a couple hits and James Battersby drove in a run as well. Lucas Thornton threw 5 innings, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits. For Oak Mountain, Matt Heiberger doubled and drove in a run, while throwing 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, with 9 strikeouts.
On Wednesday, Spain Park blew past Oak Mountain 10-0 to earn another area win. Edwards led the Jags’ offense by going 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, a home run and 4 RBIs. JR Thompson tallied 3 hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs. Evan Smallwood, Tobias and Battersby each notched RBIs in the game as well. Matthew Widra tallied a pair of hits. CJ Gross got the start for Spain Park and threw 6 scoreless innings, surrendering 4 hits and striking out 3 batters. Heiberger went 2-for-2 for Oak Mountain.
Chelsea earned a split with Hewitt-Trussville with an 11-7 win Wednesday. McNeill led the charge for the Hornets, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and 3 RBIs. Stallings had 2 hits, a double, an RBI and 3 runs scored. Cade Mims knocked in a pair, while Aiden Hughes, Thomas and Bryson Mormon each drove in a run. Mormon threw 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. For the Huskies, Jack Ollis was 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBIs. Wideman knocked in a pair, while Drew Ollis and Rob Wright each drove in a run. Argo pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 6.
Briarwood gutted out a 4-3 win over Pell City on Thursday. Jake Souders led the offensive attack by going 3-for-3 and driving home a pair of runs. Samuel Burr and Will Clark each knocked in a run to provide the rest of the offense. Drake Meeks allowed 3 runs in 4 innings, while Brayden Heaps threw the final 3 innings, allowing 2 hits and no runs.
Chelsea beat Pell City 9-1 on Friday. McNeill, Thomas and Hughes each knocked in a run for the Hornets. Hayden Poist and Stallings split the game on the hill. Poist allowed a run on a hit over 3 1/3 innings, while Stallings threw 3 2/3 innings in scoreless fashion, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 6.
SOFTBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began play last week with a 13-5 win over area foe Oak Mountain on Tuesday. For the Huskies, Ryleigh Wood, Lexie Kelly and AhKeela Honeycutt all hit home runs, combining for 5 runs batted in on the night. Chaney Peters and Sara Phillips each knocked in a pair of runs, while Hannah Dorsett went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kinley Poe pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and a run. For Oak Mountain, Anna DuBose and Alea Rye each tallied a pair of RBIs in the contest.
Spain Park edged area foe Chelsea 3-2 on Tuesday. Katie Flannery finished with a pair of hits and knocked in a run for the Jags. Ella Ussery and Ella Reed combined for a brilliant performance in the circle. Ussery allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings, while Reed fired 3 1/3 scoreless innings. For Chelsea, Kathryn Bryars drove in both of the team’s runs. Claire Purkey allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits over 3 2/3 innings. Maia Harris threw 2 1/3 innings, surrendering a run on 2 hits.
Briarwood fell to Pleasant Grove 13-1 on Tuesday.
Oak Mountain put together a furious rally in the final inning to beat Sumiton Christian 8-7 on Thursday. The Eagles scored seven runs in the seventh inning, winning on Julia Vincent’s walk-off hit. Sheridan Andrews led the way for the Eagles offensively by hitting a double and a homer and driving in 3 runs. DuBose and Emily Mackin each tallied a pair of hits and an RBI, while Marian Cummings allowed 4 runs over 6 innings pitched.
Vestavia defeated area foe Chelsea 8-4 on Thursday. Miah Simmons, EJ Bragan and Kayla Franklin all hit homers for the Rebels, combining to drive in 7 runs. Abby Gallaspy also went 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases. Elizabeth Yother was solid in the circle, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned). Sydney Carroll hit a pair of home runs for the Hornets and also pitched 4 innings.
Briarwood suffered a 15-0 loss to Helena on Thursday.
SOCCER
The Chelsea boys and girls soccer teams were back in action last Tuesday, earning wins over Prattville. The boys won 2-1 and the girls won 1-0.
Briarwood’s boys and girls faced Helena on Wednesday, with the girls winning 3-2 and the boys falling 2-1.
Oak Mountain’s boys and girls picked up a sweep over Dothan on Friday, as the boys won 4-1 and the girls won 3-0. Chelsea’s boys and girls split with Hewitt-Trussville, as the Hornets boys won 4-0 and the girls fell 5-0.
On Saturday, Oak Mountain wrapped up the road trip with a set against Enterprise. The boys drew 2-2 and the girls won 3-0.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Chelsea and Oak Mountain outdoor track and field teams competed in the Spain Park Classic last Saturday.
For Chelsea, Cady McPhail won the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2 minutes, 13 seconds to lead the way. Addison Foster won the triple jump, reaching 31 feet, 10.75 inches. The girls 4x400-meter relay team won in 4:07 as well. Tamarah Rice was third in the 100, Ty Cason finished second in the 800 and Sarah Johnston was second in javelin. For the boys, Raymond Bridgeman placed second in triple jump and Gabe Pendley was second in javelin.
For Oak Mountain, Samantha Bennett won the 100-meter dash in 12.85 seconds and won the 200 in 26.58 seconds. Catarina Williams won the 400 as well, running it in 59.96 seconds. Faith Scardino claimed top prize in the 3,200, running in 11:59. Sophie Hammett was the top long jumper, reaching 15 feet, 2.75 inches.
Taylor McMillan was second in the 100 and 200, Sara Cothran placed third in the 400, Lauren Cole was third in the 3,200, Julia Bueche was second in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, Adelaide McKeown was third in the 100 hurdles, Hammett finished second in triple jump, Samiah Jones was third in triple jump and the 4x400 relay team was second.
On the boys side, Tre Thomas won the high jump crown, clearing the bar at 5-10. Sean Ray won long jump at 19-2.5 as well. The 4x800 relay team won in 8:48.
Devan Moss finished third in the 100, Tripp Corrie was second in the 3,200, Moss and Walker Shook were third in the high jump and Corrin Hammett was third in triple jump.
