Oak Mountain's Harold Shader scored on a 1-yard run with 34 seconds left as the sixth-ranked Eagles escaped with a 27-24 win over Mountain Brook to clinch a first-round home game in the Class 7A playoffs. Oak Mountain (6-1, 4-1 Region 3) travels to Spain Park on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
Chelsea took its second straight region loss as the Hornets fell to Benjamin Russell 42-13. The game was stopped at the 7:57 mark in the fourth quarter due to lightning. Quarterback Matthew Marquet threw for 75 and ran for 65 yards to lead the Hornets (5-2, 2-1 Class 6A, Region 3) who travel to Pell City for a Friday night game at 7 in another key region game.
Spain Park edged Vestavia Hills 14-13 on Friday thanks to two blocked kicks in the fourth quarter by defensive back Michael Jackson. Jackson blocked a field goal with the Jags leading 14-7 and then swatted away an extra point that would have tied the game. The Jags had built a 14-0 halftime lead on Mason Duke’s 1-yard TD run and a 14-yard scamper by Wade Streeter, who finished with 189 yards on 33 carries. The Jaguars (4-3, 2-3 Class 7A, Region 3) now sit in a four-way tie for fourth place, and the final playoff berth, in the region. The Jags host Oak Mountain on Friday at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night.
Briarwood Christian built a 21-0 lead at the half and held off the thunderstorms which delayed the game and a comeback by Pelham to beat the Panthers 31-19. Walker Lott passed for a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Lions (3-4, 3-2 Class 6A, Region 5). The Lions visit Minor for a Friday game at 7 p.m. in another big region game.
