FOOTBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood football team won its seventh straight game in a win at Fairfield last Thursday night. Click here for a recap of the game.
This Friday, the Lions head to Hueytown to finish out regular season play. Briarwood will host a first-round Class 5A playoff game on Nov. 8.
Chelsea
The Chelsea football team rebounded from three straight losses with a win over Calera last Thursday night. Click here for the story from the game.
This Friday, the Hornets travel to Pell City to conclude the regular season. Chelsea will travel to Oxford for the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Nov. 8.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain football team dropped its final region game to Vestavia Hills last Friday night. Click here for a recap of the contest.
This week, the Eagles finish out the season by hosting Pace (Fla.) on Friday.
VOLLEYBALL
Briarwood
The Briarwood volleyball team’s season came to an end at the super regional tournament last week. On Monday, the Lions finished second in the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament to advance. Ramsay knocked off Briarwood 3-0 (18-25, 13-25, 21-25) to win the tournament.
Briarwood ran into Faith Academy at the 5A South Super Regional tournament. Faith went on to win the regional after knocking off Briarwood, but the Lions did not make it easy in a 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 32-34) defeat. In the third set, the Lions rallied from an 18-10 deficit and had several set points before ultimately falling.
Chelsea
The Chelsea volleyball team earned just the second state tournament berth in school history after a successful week of postseason play last week.
On Tuesday, the Hornets won the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament. Chelsea blasted Calera in straight sets (25-7, 25-14, 25-14) and defeated Pelham in four sets (25-16, 26-28, 25-19, 27-25) in the final.
At the 6A South Super Regional on Friday, Chelsea swept Saraland (25-13, 25-14, 25-10) in the opening round, before clinching its state tournament spot with a dominant win over Opelika (25-9, 25-14, 25-20). On Saturday, the Hornets fell to presumptive favorite Spanish Fort (20-25, 20-25, 13-25) but rallied for the third seed by beating area foe Pelham (21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-10).
This Wednesday, Chelsea faces Hartselle at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Should the Hornets win, they would play again at 3:30 p.m. The final is set for 1:15 p.m. Thursday.
Oak Mountain
The Oak Mountain volleyball team’s season came to an end last week. On Tuesday, the Eagles fell to Thompson (17-25, 15-25, 20-25) in the first round of the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The Oak Mountain cross-country teams put forth a strong showing at the Last Chance Invitational in Scottsboro last Thursday. The girls team finished second overall and the boys came home with a third-place finish. The girls swept the top two spots, with Evie Bell winning the race in 18:46, followed immediately by Lauren Cole, who finished in 19:35. Adrienne Cooley (eighth) also finished in the top 10. Walker Cole was the top boys finisher, as he placed second.
